This is by far the longest book in the series and one of the very best. King Henry is ailing, Prince Edward is crusading in the Holy Land, and England's barons are planning to rise again in a third Barons War in another effort to put one of their own on the throne. The barons' plan is to muster their forces in western Devon and forage in nearby Cornwall because it has no knights and levies to defend it. Proceeding with their plan to forage in Cornwall is a bad decision that results in intense fighting between the barons and the Company of Archers—and an unexpected gambit by the Company's commander that yields unexpected results.

This would have been a very good book, since it starts out with new characters 30 - 40 years after the last book. The problem is that the author constantly, constantly repeats himself! Paragraph after paragraph, that he has already written shows up again and again! So a book that normally would take 150 - 200 pages to tell takes 422! And it is only in this series that he does this. He has other books like the Marines that are normal!
